I am bidding on a detached garage (from main house) with office, bedroom, bath above. Stairway from garage to area above has doors at top & bottom of stairs. Would a smoke detector be required -or- advisable in the stairway area (located in the country, on acreage)?
Thanks

The location of smoke detectors is not covered by the NEC and is normally dictated by Building/Fire Codes.
Locally you would be required to have a smoke detector IN the bedroom, outside the bedroom in the common area and on each level.

I would think that a heat and CO detector in the garage and a smoke in the bed rm. and a combo smoke and CO in a common area near the bed rm. would be sufficient.
