My contract terms include the words "final payment due upon satisfactory completion of specified work." When I have a signed check, I can assume I have a satisfied customer.

If a small service call I would have the customer sign a bill receipt. If a larger job, your states lien laws may require a notice of commencement to be recorded and a release of lien should be filed.

if you do residential work these days without a solid contract and a signed agreement to work completed to satisfaction, you are asking for problems...

it's so simple to do...and can save you headaches galore...why would you not want to do it?

Completion of work and Final Inspection doesn't relief you from workmanship and defective materials.I always submit a limited warranty letter for a period of 1 year standard warranty by manufacturer and 6 months for workmanship.
Labor charges for replacement of Material during Manufacturer warranty period Is is not included in warranty period.

I do the same. The check says they are happy and they will usually let you know just how happy they are when they hand it to you. I've been lucky. Have not had to pursue that final check in court.
