Jockey Pumps on main feeder

I am curious if any of you can tell me what part of the Code does in fact cover Jockey pumps. There are many references in 695 to jockey pumps, but 695.1 (B) 2 says jockey pumps are not covered in this section. My main question is where in the Code does it say that you can feed the power to the jockey pump(s) from the main branch feeders for the fire pump. I am looking for a specific cod reference allowing it. Anyone have one?

While is doesn't come right out and say that you can do that, it talks about it and implies that you can in 695.3(A) and 695.6(C)(1).

Don's right. It doesn't say you can, but neither does it say you have to. We connect pressure maintenance (jockey) pumps to normal building service all of the time. I've researched this pretty extensively in NFPA 20 and 695 and I think we're OK with doing it that way.

When the fire starts, the jockey pump's job is eliminated. :D

Mark, beaware that if you decide to use the fire pump feeder to supply the jockey pump, that you will be making a tap to this ,as the feeder is off the service side and unprotected. You cannot make the tap for the pump in the controller. If you use a wireway or j-box it will need to be identified as such.

Be aware that you are into an Article 240 definition and are talking about service conductors.

Tap Conductors. As used in this article, a tap conductor is defined as a conductor, other than a service conductor, that has overcurrent protection ahead of its point of supply that exceeds the value permitted for similar conductors that are protected as described elsewhere in 240.4.

In other words, that would not be a tap. :D

Pierre, a service tap is not defined. However, you are correct in that 240.21 does not apply and that is what I wanted to get across.

Take care, it is good to be back if only to just peak in once in a while. :D
