I posted this here because John was the apprenticeship director here in Fort Lauderdale. Many people knew him and might be checking this board. Mike Holt had a very large presence in this part of Florida for many years and I know they knew each other.
John was very dedicated to the program and the well being of his apprentices. John died before he could retire but, doing what he enjoyed.

Brother John L. Somers, Training Director for IBEW Local Union 728, passed away March 12, 2009 after a valiant fight with cancer. Born in Bloomfield, New Jersey to Charles and Ann, John grew up in Broward County and attended Stranahan High School. He entered the IBEW Local Union 728 apprenticeship in 1966 and graduated in 1970 as a Journeyman Wireman after which he obtained his Masters License. John worked as a Journeyman, Electrical Inspector, Business Agent and was Training Director of the Florida East Coast Electrical JATC at the time of his passing. John served on many community and industrial committees and boards. John was a devoted father, husband and union representative and worked tirelessly at promoting dignity, fairness, and education for all working men and women. He will be sorely missed by his loving family, co-workers, members and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife Jo Ann, children Kelly and John Jr., granddaughter Emily, two brothers, one niece, three nephews including Bill and Kevin , who are both members of Local Union 728, one great niece and two great nephews.
