a joules is the rate of dissipation of power per unite of time. can some one give me a example of this in simple terms. SO 1 HP = 44760 JOULES.?

Re: joules

40 joules. This is enough energy to lift a 10 pound dog almost 3 feet off the floor. Will that work?

Re: joules

I was waiting for dereck to reply...I just knew he would come up with a good one.

1 joule (not 40 but 1 joule) is the energy required to lift a adult male Ruby-throated Hummingbird 12 feet.

Or, a little closer to home using dereck?s number, 40 joules also equals .000011 kilowatt hours or 40 wattseconds.

Please allow me to split a hair: A ?joule? has nothing to do with ?per unit of time.? It is a measure of energy (or equivalently, a measure of work). Rather, it is power that represents the dissipation of energy per unit of time. Both Dereck and Mike correctly used this concept, in giving their (brilliant and accurate, as well as entertaining) examples.

Re: joules

On a more serious note:
1 joule = 1 watt second
3600 joule = 1 watt hour
3600000 joule = 1 Kilo-watt hour

Re: joules

Hmmm...

A 12 oz can of beer contains about 355 cc of beer.
That's about 357 grams (1.006 g/cm^3)

My arm is 12 inches long from elbow to wrist. That's .3048 meters.

If I sit with my elbow on the table, and lift that 12 oz can of beer till it reaches my mouth, that's
.357kg x 9.8 m/s^2 (gravity) x .3048 m = 1.066 Joules.

'Course, the next time takes about .8 joules, and the next, about .5, and the next...

Re: joules

Frank started this thread out with Joules. We then went onto dogs, hummingbirds, bennie got his engine ear degree, then happy hour at dellphinus? place, several feeble attemps to make points with our wifes for..., then back to dogs, ending up with medical defibrillators.

So tell us Frank, is there anything else we can help you with?
