My electrical apprenticeship began with the promise that I would receive a certification from the Dept of Labor. When I began looking into the difference between this and becoming a licensed electrician, I was told by the Dept. of Labor, that their certification was national, while licensing varied from State to State. The gist of my conversations with them was that Dept. of Labor certification was good all over the country, and a much bigger asset for me.
How true is this? While I understand that an electrician still needs to be licensed in his/her respective State, will these States acknowledge my certification?

It will vary from Jurisdiction to Jurisdiction. In Maryland, the only license recognized state wide is a Master Electrician license. The state reciprocates with Virginia and Delaware only. Masters from other states will need to verify their experience and pass the Maryland test. You will also need a Master license in the County in which you want to work. You can get a reciprocal license from the county using your state license and you can get a reciprocal state license using your county license. There are only five counties in Maryland that have or require a Journeyman license. With each county and some cities having their own rules it is ludicrous for anyone to tell you that their certification is recognized nation wide. Going form jurisdiction to jurisdiction can be very confusing and difficult.
