Judging credibility of estimate

The scenario: Full gut renovation of simple suburban residential house, It's simple two-story above ground with a basement apartment, each of the three floors is 840 fsf. The building is a simple rectangle. With all of the walls open, the task is to install two (separately metered) 200A services (one for the upstairs two floors and one for the basement apartment, respectively) and then rewire the entire house. How much and what details should be provided to the customer to convey the real-world, valid basis for the quote? And how far outside your sensibilities would a quote for, say, $40,000 fall? Thank you for any attention whatsoever you give this first post from a small fry somewhere out there in real space.
