Hypothetical situation? Rigid is install for physical damage in a garage? Is a four inch square the best choice for a junction box in this application?

Joke all you want but if the customer specs rigid threaded conduit ruining that into a stamped steel box is just stupid.

Those malleable iron boxes will take a pretty good hit while a stamped steel box can't take even a glancing blow.

Definately use the fs or fd box. Thats the whole pupose of the rigid conduit is to protect the wiring from any damage. When you install a regular 4" square box you are creating a weak link in the protection. With that being said nothing is indestuctible. I think some people try there best to see if they an tear something up.

At Costco , I've noticed 4S boxes on large roof metal support posts, they use a welded angle iron bracket that extends past the 4s box on all sides.
