I have an application in a CL. 1 Div. 1 Gr. C,D area, in a enclosure I only have one strip on terminal blocks

as the terminal are not arcing or sparking devise

would a NEMA 4X enclosure be permitted or would I need an NEMA 7 enclosure with seals

I understand that the enclosure must be rated for the area classification is this the reason to install a NEMA 7 enclosure only

and were in the code would I find this information if a NEMA 7 enclosure is required for terminal blocks

I realize that the AHJ would have final decision

thanks

You just answered your own question. The wiring method has to be rated for the area classification.

Re: Junction box w/terminals blocks class 1 div 1

ok with that understood it is the area classification requirements,

so will the enclosure need to have seals installed

thanks

If it were only as simple as that.

Yes, you could use a NEMA 7 (indoor) box and Seal-offs.

But that might be overkill ($$$) if your wires are for Intrinsically Safe devices and you have I.S. barriers / Isolators (and seal-off at the correct Safe Area /C1D1 junction) in a control room.

Or if your wires are between a simple RTD device and it's transmitter, again, nothing more than a box rated for the environment, not hazardous area rating, might be used.

But if they are for something like a 5HP motor, then I'd say the NEMA 7 box & seals may be needed.

So, please tell us what signals (devices)/voltage/amps the wires attached to the terminals are and any seal-offs / conduit / etc that are planned/used.

BTW: There is a "Hazardous (Classified) Locations" forum here.

in the shelter is a vent fan, a receptacle and an exterior light and interior light, all 120v 20 amp max

the j-box is just a termination point for field connection,

so with no acring or sparking device would i classifiy this as nonincendive devise

it may be best to just add seals, I just wanted to find this in the code were it identifies terminal blocks in this type of application

again I see the block as non arcing or sparking

I know this is done in a class 1 div 2 classification just cant remember the guide in cl 1 div 1

thanks

Re: Junction box w/terminals blocks class 1 div 1

killer76,

The junction box is just that,a junction box,the terminal blocks inside of it have no more bearing on the situation than wirenuts do.

Re: Junction box w/terminals blocks class 1 div 1

so what you are telling me is that seals are required on the enclosure,

can someone tell me were to find this in the code

thanks

Re: Junction box w/terminals blocks class 1 div 1

The box must be rated for Class 1 Division 1 [501.10(A)(3)] and seals are not required unless the raceway size is 2" or larger. [501.15(A)(1).

Re: Junction box w/terminals blocks class 1 div 1

See 501.15 (A).

If the box has arcing/sparking devices within it, or has conduits larger than 2" entering it, then seals are required.

The box is required to be approved for Cl 1 Div 1 per 501.10 (A)(3).
