Hi,

I am in san francisco and I have a client who insists that a pair of spliced wires cannot just be capped but must have a juction box. Unfortunately, because of new pipes, there is no room for one. The contractor with whom I am working doen't think this is important. Can anyone tell me if it is important and if merely capping meets code.

Thanks Dave

Re: junction box

I believe there are some instances where merely capping a spliced wire is permitted by the NEC, but generally speaking, the splice in question has to be fairly inaccessible.

As to the specifics regarding where it might be permitted, I'm not very clear about that because I always use junction boxes when I splice wires. I personally believe that a spliced wire that is not protected by a junction box (with appropriate bonding) is dangerous and doesn't look professional. Considering your situation where the splice is being done so close to new pipes (metal, I assume) that there's no room for a junction box, the potential for those pipes to become energized is increased.

If it were me, I'd find another way to do it.

Re: junction box

If you are not using the wires disconect them from the source and you can abandon the dead cables in the wall.

If the wires are live you MUST use a box.

300.15 Boxes, Conduit Bodies, or Fittings ? Where Required.

A box shall be installed at each outlet and switch point for concealed knob-and-tube wiring.
Fittings and connectors shall be used only with the specific wiring methods for which they are designed and listed.

Where the wiring method is conduit, tubing, Type AC cable, Type MC cable, Type MI cable, nonmetallic-sheathed cable, or other cables, a box or conduit body complying with Article 314 shall be installed at each conductor splice point, outlet point, switch point, junction point, termination point, or pull point, unless otherwise permitted in 300.15(A) through (M).
