I have a home where I am conbining an outdoor lighting circuit to a romex wire to go to the panel. At the opening (through the brick) to the home I do not understand why an LB is not a suitable device for junctioning. It is watertight! I do not want to place a junction box because it would look tacky on the brick of the home and it also can not go on the ground outside. I am tring to ponder other options and cannot think of a good idea for this app.

Who says you can not splice in a conduit body?

All that is required is that is marked with the volume and you do not exceed the wire fill just as with a box.

It may (probably) will have to be larger than a 1/2" conduit body though.

My AHJ says that an LB is not a suitable application for a splice. I asked him for the article which states this because I have never heard of such. He said that he would find it and get back with me. I told him exactly what you said. It is a 1" LB and had a spliced 12-2 and a spliced 14-2 (not to each other. )

Re: Junctioning THWN and Romex

This is from the 2002 NEC you may want to check it against the 2005.

314.16(C) Conduit Bodies.

314.16(C)(2) With Splices, Taps, or Devices. Only those conduit bodies that are durably and legibly marked by the manufacturer with their volume shall be permitted to contain splices, taps, or devices. The maximum number of conductors shall be computed in accordance with 314.16(B). Conduit bodies shall be supported in a rigid and secure manner.

Can you put the j box inside the house? You probably already thought of that. I'm useless.

Re: Junctioning THWN and Romex

I would normally use a single gang Bell box. Can't see how that would look any worse than a 1" LB. Besides, shrubs can hide a lot of ugliness!
