just what is an applinace

In another thread on garage door openers some one used sec. 430 to back up there veiw. But would a garage door opener be an appliance, just becuse it has a motor in it dose that mean we use sec 430 vs. 422? In that case a spa tub has a motor. Or it could be an appliance? or as a motor the braker could be 125%? I know we don't do this but, when is it a applance or a motor,fixed heat,air-conditioning

It's an appliance when it doesn't fit squarely into any of the articles that deal with a specific appliance type.

Whenever you are referencing a particular Article, try to read the scope and any information that may be included in Part I General, if that is included in the Article.

422.3 Other Articles.
The requirement of Article 430 Shall apply to the installation of motor-operated appliances, and the requirements of Article 440 shall apply to the installation of appliances containing a hermetic refrigrant motor-compressor(s), except as specifically amended in this article.

A waste disposal has a motor do we ues 430 or 422, 1/2hp disposal see were I'm going
