Is anyone familiar with a method of splicing high-voltage transmission lines by using explosives to compress a metal sleeve onto the wires? This was mentioned in a brief article in the local paper yesterday. The article didn't go into detail about how the process worked, it just warned local residents that they would be hearing some loud booms.

I know that there are crimp tools that use shots like the tools that are used to shoot anchors into concrete.

Yes on smaller wire, 336 477 etc, the shots are used in a tool. The cartrigde looks like a 20 gauge shell. On some of the larger higher voltage (161kv and so) a sure nuff explosive is used that welds the splicing sleeve onto the conductor. I will try and find some pix of this.
