Is MCM and KCM interchangeable terms for conductor sizes?

Yes, though "KCMIL" is more commonly used than "KCM."

I was told in a code class recently that (and is substantiated in the code book tables) that kcmil is the only proper acronym.

It's the only one that still shows up in the NEC. But until all of us old fellows retire, you are still going to keep hearing and seeing the "MCM" version.
