Just wondering if a Keyless lamp holder can be used under a porch or canopy? I had an electrician challenge me on this question, I've gone through some UL listings and cant find the use and locations for a Keyless.

Re: Keyless lamp Holder

Without backing of info i would say keyless lamp holders are for IMO dry locations. The definition of a location damp is really vauge in so far as when it states partially protected locations. That is a judgement call at it`s finest. Is it subject to moisture would make it a damp location but there are no parameters that set forth a point in which dry goes to damp. Now wet is cut and dry subject to saturation .

Re: Keyless lamp Holder

I have taken down some old ones that were marked dry location only. Also, called EPCO and they said they are not listed for damp location.

Re: Keyless lamp Holder

I went through the UL Certifications Directory and also did not come up with a specific reference, for all the material that was on "Lampholders".

I suspect that the manufacturer of the fixture you are talking about in your original post will be the source of the Wet / Damp / Dry location rating for that lampholder.

I have to suspect that a porcelain keyless is going to be different than a fiberglass or plastic keyless.

Re: Keyless lamp Holder

An open porch and the area under a canopy are by definition a damp location (see article 100 "location, damp"). You will need to look at the UL LISTING for the lampholder you are using to see if it is listed for a damp location. If it does not say "suitable for damp location" then you have to assume it is only suitable for a dry location. That being the case it would not be acceptable in the location you describe.
