I know open bulb keyless pullchain fixtures are not allowed in clothes closets as per 410.8c,but does anyone know of a code requirement preventing them from being installed in a commercial heater closet with no combustible material?

Re: Keyless pullchain fixture

In my opinion, if any storage space is available in the closet, then no open lamp fixtures should be used. Besides, a small globe fixture is very inexpensive and nearly as easy to install. When in doubt, consult the AHJ.

Re: Keyless pullchain fixture

I agree with you on a new installation but this happened to be an existing fixture that the owner wanted refed, seeing as how the wiring to this fixture was removed with the old furnace feeder,,,,,,I just didnt have a good solid code requirement to refer him to to insist on purchasing a new fixture no matter how inexpensive.

Re: Keyless pullchain fixture

I'm not aware of any code restricting luminaires or lamp holders in commercial closets.

Re: Keyless pullchain fixture

By the way, we can't call them fixtures anymore. They are luminaires now! Parle vou Francais?

Re: Keyless pullchain fixture

I think it depends on the closet. I red tagged one in a closet under a stairway. The lamp holder was located on the sloped section where the clearance from the bulb to the floor of the space was less than 2'. I considered it a violation of 410.5.

OK Ryan....here is another strange reaction!! You are good at provoking these. :)

How does 410.8 not apply to a commercial clothes closet?

Steve

Hi Steve. I should have worded my response better. Your section does apply to clothes closets in all occupancies.

I'll try to stop triggering strange reactions!!! :p
