Kitchen Exhaust Hood + Friday

Got a call yesterday afternoon to go and hook up a Kitchen Exhaust Hood. Went to look at the job, maybe even do the job right on the spot. Get there... A commercial kitchen. Put a new appliance in, and it wasn't under the existing hood, they had a piece of Duct Work running from the top of the appliances exhaust out under the the hood and they wanted me to hook it up... After scratching my head for about 30 seconds... I broke down and asked them what they wanted me to hook up.... Needless to say they thought I had to run power to this piece of duct that had no fan or control. Some please help me... why are there stupid people always on Fridays?

Semi-related story: They're not always on Friday, and not always customers.

A couple of months ago, we wired a small hood system with exhaust only, new bottle and micro's, adding a gas valve and reset box and a horn/strobe. Done, working, paid, left.

A week later, we get a call from the suppression system installer, who's there, that our work failed inspection, because the intake fan did not shut down upon system activation.

Intake fan?

So we drove back to the restaurant, in case we missed something or an intake fan had been added (the former our fault, the latter an additional charge), and found nothing different.

There was a strong intake airflow just from the exhaust. The inspector felt the incoming air when the exhaust came on, and it didn't go away when he test-tripped the system.

We wasted the 30-min-each-way trip, can't bill the county (their rules), can't bill the system installer (gives us work), and can't bill the customer (certainly not his fault.) Oh, well.
