A family member is redoing their kitchen layout and they are going to put a small table in the cooking area like an island but not attached...more like a table.

They want to have an outlet but since the table wont be attached to the floor the outlet cant be attached to it.

The way they are going to have to go is with a floor outlet.

I have installed some floor outlets in a family room before but have not done it in a kitchen. The family said they have the floor cleaned every now and then and would not want the outlet to get water in it.

So what type of setup should I use for this floor outlet?
and
Does it have to be a GFCI?

Thanks

So a floor outlet under a table? In a Kithen? - Not a floor outlet in a table, in a Kitchen?

First OK - Later not OK.... (Code violation of face up recepticals in work surface)

However being in a Kitchen.... I might not use a floor loutlet, but maybe a "floor access box"... Some are made mop-tight, and would be less subceptable to damage. Would be a cleaner look too. Like these, allow cords to be pluged in, and be closed. They also make them to have flooring inserted to blend nicley with the floor. The ones I linked to as an example are really pricey, but others are available from T&B and others.

And even though it is not a CT outlet, but knowing the general purpose of the outlet, it should be..... And for this location and use, I would suggest a GFI CB....

exactly, this will be mounted in the floor, not in the table.

I knew I could not just install an outlet without a cover...I just have never seen any covers like the one in your link you posted.

ill look into those floor access boxes more.

To my knowledge, all floor boxes are (supposed to be) water proof when the cover is attached. Mopping over them shouldn't be a problem.
I usually use a kit that has a brass cover with a screw-in (brass) plug. You can buy the kit at one of the big box stores for about $30. It includes the floor box, receptacle, cover, gasket and screw in plug. It is a single receptacle. I've also used some of the plastic (nylon) floor receptacle kits, they hold a duplex receptacle. They work well too.
They should be good for your application..

lmao, that would be great

well ill tell him to look at some of the products you guys suggested. He was going to go down to the cooper electric near him and ask to see what they had and said about it too.

I'm not doing this work, he is. They had electrical done a few months back and back then said for them to put an extra wire or too so they could expand later if needed.

so all they really have to do is tie into power and install the box with a GFCI...

oh i forgot the fun part of making a nice sized hole in the kitchen floor

The FSR boxes will floor you [/pun] - $500+ but there are others made by T&B simular to it, and also can be cut in.

Hillbilly, the outlet not being on the countertop doesn't need a GFI by code, but if your related to the people in the house - it's a good idea. Just because of its location....

Exactly my thought on the location for the GFCI, normally it would not have to be and this is supposed to be a water tight box but this family has the pros come in to spray the floor clean each week or so and that gives a good chance of water getting into that new box no matter how leak resistant they say it is.

IMO, it's better to have that GFCI in there when ya look at it from that point of view.
