I just looked at kitchen reno where an island will be installed. The island will be 90" wide and 48" deep. The island will be one level i.e. totally flat, therefore, popup receptacles will be required. There will be bar seating on one side of the island. There will be a 36x22" cooktop centered on the other side. If I calculated correctly, four popup receptacles along the long dimension will satisfy the countertop spacing requirements (at 9, 33, 57, and 81 inches).

Question: Can the receptacles be placed at any depth along the short dimension? For example, could they be placed one foot from the back edge?

Question: Do I need to be concerned about adding receptacles along the short dimension since the island is so wide?

Question: Are additional receptacles allowed under the 12"(?) overhang of the bar side for phone charging (per HO request)? I know normally we would avoid SABC outlets there.

2017 NEC only requires one receptacle per island.

I’m all for overkill however. Better to be looking at them, not looking for them.

There is also no prohibition against receptacles mounted on the wall of an island. The less than a 12” overhang is applicable to the required receptacle.

If that is going on the surface, you’re pretty much free to do as you please with additional receptacles.

There have been some changes.. Is this under the '17 Code ?

There is no spacing requirement and prior to the 2020 code an island only required one receptacle outlet.
The 2020 requires the following:
At least one receptacle outlet shall be provided for the first 0.84 m2 (9 ft2), or fraction thereof, of the countertop or work surface. A receptacle outlet shall be provided for every additional 1.7 m2 (18 ft2), or fraction thereof, of the countertop or work surface.
Also note that if you are planning on using a pop-up receptacle outlet, only the Hubble one complies with 408.5(E) that was new for the 2017 code. There are a number of others that imply that they are compliant, but they are not.
EDIT...the correct code section is 406.5(E).

Thanks all. I forgot that islands are treated differently than regular countertops. Now I'm thinking I'll put two duplex receps on each side of the island.

2017 code BTW.

I looked at 408.5. I think you cited the wrong section. This one is titled "Clearance for Conductor Entering Bus Enclosures".
