I have a customer who wants to put a counter top that extends 8" over the counter in an island. I believe the code says that the outlet cannot be over 6" from the edge of the counter. Do I tell them the counter top can't be over 6" over the edge? I don't have my 2014 code book handy now, so I may be misquoting it. Also All counter top outlets must be GFI protected, whether or not they are further than 6ft. from the sink, is this correct? Been a while since I've wired a entire house. Thanks

All kitchen receptacles have to be GFCI and AFCI protected.

As far as the counter issue, just install a receptacle or a power strip under the edge of the counter.

Yes to GFCI protection on all receptacles serving counter tops, for the receptacle to count as the required receptacle the overhang cannot exceed 6". You can still put one there but you will need another to meet the receptacle requirement.
