My thoughts are ,..that where I work there is very limited liability assumed by the municipalities ..

I as an EC,..do not document all the things that were not installed when I left nor do I document all the things in place if I'm adding wiring to an existing structure ..

I totally respect that. However, we all do things differently.

Not doing so could cause you problems later. Fingers point and nobody will admit anything. I won a law suit years ago because of county keeping prints submited. Judge was undesided and asked the GC just what all did he get for the contract price. He said what ever was on the print. She then asked if either of us had a print. I told her no but will gladly get you a certified copy from building department and as requested high light what was added. The GC knowed he lost right then and now.
Documents go way further than words.

Sorry Greg, but I'll try to answer the original question. If they want to add an island I would say fine as long as it complies, done. If there was not an island there and an island is not required, why would I document it?

Remember that "technically" a kitchen remodel doesn't require a permit in the first place.

Islands are not required as we all know but if I hear they are wanting to put one in well there is the twist and BTW you cannot F**t out here without a permit. John like I said no biggy I jot down a simple sentence and move on. I wish I would never had opened up my big mouth in the first place:D

I'm not getting on you, I've said it a bunch of times, I don't care what other inspectors do, and I mean that in a "respect for how you do your job" kind of way, you want to be a hard ass, be a hard ass, if you want to give away the farm, that's fine too, my names not on it.

Kind of having a rough week and I apologize if it came off harsh, it wasn't meant too.:D

Would you allow the island:-?

Personally, I do not care, nor do I have any say in whether they put the island in. I agree that it may look like an EC did not do his/her job if someone comes by and sees an island with no power run to it, but my only response to the GC would be that if you want to install and pass one, then X will be required to do so. I am sure there are the GCs that would install one and hold you to a requirement saying that it was "planned" already, and that is where documentation becomes so very important, but that is just completely foreign to the type of people I have been able to work with, so I have no good answer for that scenaio.

In my area, moving something like an appliance, and hence the gas/electric/water/etc., then a permit is required.

If it's just replacing cabinets and/or c'top, we don't need no steenkeen permit.

That is pretty much the same here, that is why I stated depends on what the remodel consists of.
