Can the receptacle that is serving a kitchen pennisula area be located on the wall that the pennisula is joined to, similar to a counter top receptacle? Also, if a pennisula is not connected to any other kitchen countertop, is that whole space considered to be one pennisula, or is part of it a countertop and part of it a pennisula? I am asking this because I have a 5 foot pennisula sticking out from a wall in a kitchen. I have heard conflicting opinions on whether or not I need one or two receptacles. For example, one for the countertop (the first 2 feet) and one for the pennisula (the remaining)

Re: kitchen pennisula plug location

lets first understand that the code is minimum
requiements. However the way the code reads is that a peninsula requires only 1 recpt. on the
end of it. end meaning that part that is not directly connected to the wall, that is still common countertop. that is how I enforce it in my jurisdiction. J/W/C Glynn. Co. coastal Ga.

210.52 Dwelling Unit Receptacle Outlets.
C) Countertops.

You would need one rec. for a Peninsular Counter Spaces that has a long dimension of 24 in. or greater and the short dimension of 12 in. or greater.

I believe you could use the wall space in front of the Peninsular Counter Spaces to locate this rec.

I would not consider the wall space that a Peninsular Counter Spaces is attached to as counter wall space. I believe you are only required to provide one rec. to serve these area?s you have mentioned

As I understand it a penninsular requires one receptacle mininmum, and this can be placed on the knee wall as long as it is located within the allowed area of no more than 6 inches below the counter top it is to service and that the countertop have an overhang of no more than 11 inches for this to apply( my code book is in the office so if I have these dimensions wrong please correct)

To answer the original question, I am not sure. Is this considered a peninsula if it is not attached to the other counter? I think it would be and therefore one receptacle on the wall that the counter sticks out from would suffice.

peninsula

\Pen*in"su*la\, n. [L. peninsula or paeninsula; paene almost + insula an island. See Isle.] A portion of land nearly surrounded by water, and connected with a larger body by a neck, or isthmus.

 The peninsula counter to me, is the part of the counter that protrudes out beyond the wall counter edge(usually a 90degree angle to the wall).
A receptacle located on the wall above the counter is not considered the outlet required for a peninsula, it's just a counter receptacle. The peninsula only starts where the ftont edge of the counter ends.
