Got into a bind lately. Wired a kitchen last fall, and the customer decided they wanted a pop-up receptacle in one of the countertops. So I downloaded a cut sheet from T&B, the granite guys cut the hole and now............... T&B isn't making them right now. All I can find out is they're on a 'permanent engineering hold'. Whatever that means.

So, after calling a couple dozen supply houses listed on-line and ending up with a batting average of 0.000, I thought I'd try a different tactic.

I'm looking for a SH with a Thomas & Betts KPR-15G-NKL pop-up receptacle.

If you could ask your local SH if they have one in stock, I'd appreciate it.

That's one expensive device.
If they have it still better than the alternative.

EBAY,

EBAY,

Just completed an inspection in Mass and the homeowner wanted this item and found it on EBAY. Had all the paperwork and original box to make sure that it was code-compliant. It actually looks great in the center of the counter....

They're coming back!

Yeah, I'm reviving an old thread. But in case I'm not the only one wondering about these things: it seems they're coming back. That's good news, if you need a pop-up, and insist on one that is splash-resistant when popped-up, as well as when pushed-down flush. Because I can't find another one that does that. Especially not one that's code compliant (hardwired, not to mention tamper resistant).

I spoke to Thomas & Betts, including an engineer there. Here's what I learned:

Although the product (KPR-15G-NKL, for nickel finish) is "showing as on an engineering hold", according to the T&B support rep (and, according to one supplier, it's been on hold for about a year, with no status or prognosis) it is now actually not on hold!

That was the good news. The bad news: There's an "issue" with getting components from a South African supplier. So, they are manufacturing slowly (if at all?) against back orders. He estimated about 8 weeks delay.

What was the cause of the engineering hold? (I asked, in case I get lucky, and find some new old stock.) It seems the latch wouldn't stay down. That's been fixed, of course. But if you find a NOS unit, you won't have to worry about subtle gasket-failure that would admit a spill, or about anything electrical.

And if you DO find an NOS unit, or if you find ANY unit at a reasonable price, then I'd love to hear about it! I haven't seen them under $300 online. I've not yet queried the local SHs.

Nah, you still can't get these things.

I said, last summer,

Did I say "8 weeks"? Well, it's been over a year, and you still can't get these. My SH's computer says "On hold. Do not order.", which my sales guy says he's never seen before.

Annoying, because this is the only pop-up receptacle I know of, that's waterproof when open and when closed. Anybody know of an alternative? (The Mockett.com ones are only spill-proof when closed.)

Also, this is the only kitchen-worthy pop-up I know of that could count as a required receptacle; the similar units are UL listed as "relocatable power taps" (extension-cord-like).

I got lucky, and found one. If you're reading this AFTER August 2014, then try your own luck: Go to TNB.com, search KPR-15G, and use the "where to buy" box for the finish of your choice. As of today, I got the last known unit; somebody had returned one to a supply house in Iowa. All gone, now, sorry.
