According to article 210.8(B) Other Than Dwelling Units, all kitchen 125-volt receptacles must be GFCI protected.

My question is: what defines a kitchen??? Could a countertop with a microwave in a lunchroom be classified as a kitchen because it is used for food preparation?

Re: Kitchens

The NEC itself neither defines the word nor explains the intent. In the State of Washington, the administrative codes are about to be changed to clearly and explicitly define kitchen as including any place at which food is prepared or served. So your question would get a "yes" answer here. I don't know if Oregon has a similar clarification.

Re: Kitchens

The exact same question has come up here as to what defines a kitchen, we have been using a similiar defintion here which also causes lots of problems. Since the code does state all 15a or 20a receptacles in the kitchen which would include IG receptacles for computers, singles receptacles for refrigeration units etc. and I don't see any exceptions.fun fun fun
