kNob and Tube: Ceiling Fan

this is just for the 'principle' of debate. :)

I have a friend that has an old house , rental that has knob and tube wiring in it (built in 1952, no ground).
Most of the recepticles are 2 prong, no ground. He puts in a celing fan, just tapped into knob and tube. There is no ground. I told him 'techinically' by CODE its suppose to be grounded, celing fan that is. He tries to debate with me and say it doesnt have to be cause the house doesnt have it and that has been grandfathered in.

I say the HOUSE has, NOT the ceiling fan. :) Even though the likely hood of any one messing with the ceiling fan getting shock is VERY remote and i wouldnt really worry about it, he is techinically against code.

I couldnt find the code article to back me up, could you help me?? and just for the sake of principle of debate, would you install a ceiling fan in a knob and tube house??

"and just for the sake of principle of debate, would you install a ceiling fan in a knob and tube house??"

No way not ever. If you think it is unlikely for a fan to develop a line to case fault, think again. I have seen more than a few. The problem with fans is that they MOVE. And with that old crumbly wire, it doesn't take much for a fault to develop. If they want a fan, it gets a new circuit and box or else they can call a handyman.

Ok, would it be ok to attach the ground wire to an accessible point on the grounding electrode conductor (water pipe)?

I would install it & would not even make a mention of it.
AS long as the box is supported & the fan won't fall, I'm cool with it.
to me they are better off with a new fan, than the old single bulb, un insulated fixture with a 100watt bulb in it.
