Is there any particular way to code compliantly splice into existing knob and tube wiring with modern day romex. Any input would be appreciated

Quick answer to the OP's question... Loom into a box, one conductor per loom, one loom per hole. Romex into the box.... Splice - close box... However you need to pick up an ECG somewhere if the romex is an extention of the K&T and not for receptical use where you could just use a GFI... Back in the day, it was much easier to do that - but now the easiest place to do that would be another grounded box if there is one and both circuits are from the same panel to satisfy 250.130(C)(3).

I am impressed. Where were you and this back in the 70's when I was learning to deal with Knob and Tube wiring? I learn something everyday on this site. Semper Fi. Buddy

I learned how to do Western Union splices, poorly, from a telephone repairman more than 30 years ago. Nice to see a clearer explanation of how they are supposed to be done. Makes me want to go out and rewire my Corvette ...

You need an EGC even if the NM supplies a receptacle.

The only time you can use a GFCI in place of an EGC is for a replacement receptacle.

As a rule, I'll never add or tie to any Knob & Tube. No EGC, & if you think about the fact that this K&T was installed in the 30's with the load demands expected in the 30's its probably already close to overloaded.
Most smart customers would rather pay a small amount more to have the new wiring installed according to 2005 code & have the new wiring, no mater how minor it is, brought back to a new breaker and separated from the old K&T

Learn how to sell a better job, not just a cheap quick fix.
 
knob and tube

I have never intercepted or disturbed existing k&t wire its just that I am having a service change inspected where a previous electrician had tied a piece of romex into the k&t wiring put it in a j box w wirenuts. Now I did not do this work but the splice will be staring the inspector in the face at the new panel. .I was also thinking what is the correct way to tie in. Thank you for your replies they were verry informativebbbb
