under the 05 NEC , can you partially change out knob and tube wiring without replacing it all?
say the EC wants to change out two rooms that seem to be having problems, but not the whole house. would the wiring need to be replaced all the way back to the panel ? junction box?
where is this addressed? thanks!

I don't believe the code address this issue. Art. 394 is the article you want but there is other info in art. 300.15,300.16, 312.15B, 314.3, 314.17B & C,

If the EC is planning to upgrade two rooms, then extending to complete this task is not the way to go. Run a new circuit. Also, your AHJ may not allow it.

I would not go for tapping romex onto the old.Would think its legal to rewire any outlet he wants but will need a ground back to panel.Really is your call on something like this.

mayjong,

If he can cut the k&t wiring back to where it splices to the trunk, put the

proper amount of (tape) insulation over the exposed area, then run a new

circuit to rewire the recpts. that he cut out of there. Why would he have to

replace the original k&t wiring that goes on to feed the rest of the circuit??

Jim,

The EC is not tapping on to the k&t, he is cutting a couple of rooms off the

k&t wiring, and rewiring with romex back to the panel. But the k&t continues

on and feeds other things like it always has. Mayjong wants him to remove

all the k&t and rewire the rest of the circuit. That's the way I read it.

Some local building codes ban K&T, forcing upgrades, but the NEC describes several wiring-method transitions with K&T. (ie) Each K&T conductor must enter boxes thru its own bushed KO, etc..

Using the NEC to check the circuits would require showing where the K&T fails its own wiring-method criteria. Perhaps failing the industry standard criteria for insulation resistance testing.

I am reading it differantly.Mayjong needs to supply bit more details.
