Jim,
We get paid for this sort of thing up here! Actually more!

Furthermore, in addition to some of the other responses, if I go and see an apparent violation which is potentially hazardous to life and/or property, I now have an inherent obligation to report the violation(s) with or without getting paid. This is a very touchy area for me. I agree with Lady, you know whats there already (since you estimated the original job). Price it the same plus add for time to demolish the violation. The customers only downside- she is now the proud owner of a heap of unneccesary material, and she had to pay you additionally to rip it out. I believe in not buring bridges either (don't inflate the price, just justify it)In further thought, make all filing and inspections contingent on her right to build there in the first place based on your added post of zoning issues.

Re: Know it all customer!!

I dought you will get paid as a witness the same amount you make in the field, maybe $20 for a day or some other joke amount.
Before he goes out there and sees this he is not involved or liable to do anything.Yes i agree that if he sees this job and safety violations were not dealt with maybe he is obligated to at least turn it into the county.I think she already knows what is wrong as he exsplained voltage drop to her from the begining. If i was to go out there again i would first want paid for first trip and time spent making the list and for this new trip.Going out again is like starting all over again. He was nice and gave her a price to do it right. She found a cheaper man ,thats fine too. What makes you think she will not just use him again to see what needs replaced and get the same handyman back again. She burned him once, shame on her,she burns him twice shame on him.If i felt there was danger if not fixed i would then call the inspector and tell him everything.

Wayne, are you insane? Read your own posts. No building permits, illegal plumbing, gave you the shaft once. This one is a rattle snake looking for someone to bite. Walk away. For the love of god, walk away man!

Re: Know it all customer!!

Wow!! I really didn't think I would get this kind of response. Its nice to see that there are people in this trade that are willing to give helpful advice to someone they don't even know. I have been kicked around and praised at the same time about this. I like constructive critism from my brothers and sisters in the trade, it helps me make better decisions in the future. You people are unbelievable.
I have talked to the lady this morning and I told her that if I came back out there there would be a charge for my time a that a contract would be written up and inspections will be made. She told me that she didn't want inspections so I told her to get someone else to do the job. I wished her well and told her good luck.

Wayne- I know your post initially had elements of an NEC issue, but developed into an ELECRTICAL CONTRACTING AND ESTIMATING/MANAGEMENT issue (since the post was really about a Customer/Contractor relationship)rather rapidly. In the future if you should experience any problems or want feedback on any contracting issue, I would be more than happy to give you feedback if you would like (and I'm sure other members who posted on this thread would also), however it is probably more suitable under the ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING AND ESTIMATING/MANAGEMENT heading. Look forward to posting with you in the future. Good luck!

Something to consider. I am assuming that with your background and expertise, you also informed her that inspections are not a choice; they are required by law. Whether we like it or not, as members of this society we have a certain obligation and duty to report violations of the law and in some circumstances even go as far a citizen's arrest. The fact is, failure to act can be grounds for charges by the state. Our society today has become too complacent and passive to remember this duty that we accept as citizens. We are more willing to close our eyes or turn away from the confrontation rather than do our part. It's someone else's responsibility. It's someone else's fault.

This person isn't a know-it-all customer, she is a careless individual that is willing to place others and herself in harm's way, blatantly violating the law in order to save a buck. I see this person as nothing more than a common thief. I feel sorry for those that have to pick up the pieces.
