I have a coy pond that has a waterfall which is powered by a circuit with GFCI protection. I recently added a UV sterilizing light that is enclosed in a stainless steel housing. The housing has a separate ground wire as a case ground. I decided to drive a separate ground rod and ground the case to the separate ground rod. When I plugged in the UV lamp to the GFCI receptacle, the receptacle tripped. Could this be caused by using a separate ground rod instead of grounding to the house grounding system? When I disconnected the separate ground wire and plugged in the UV light, the receptacle did not trip. Then reattached the ground wire to the separate ground rod and the receptacle still did not trip. Any advice on what could be done incorrectly?
