Laminated beams in modular homes

I am running romex in the basement of a single family modular home, and have been told not to drill through the lamimated beams. Is a short length of PVC conduit strapped to the bottom of the lam beam acceptable? Should I use connectors with plastic bushings on the ends of the PVC conduit? Thanks.

laminated beam? what type exactly (glu-lam, other), what size, and who said not to drill through it. most laminated beams allow for some small holes. how many holes and what size are you talking about?
