In certain fixtures MERCURY VAPOR,METAL HALIDE,MULTI-VAPOR can be swaped, but you have to look at the label on the ballast. as it will tell you what bulbs can be used. there is some retrofit bulbs that you can use that will change a sodium vapor to a metal halide but they are hard to find.
