Are these splices ok to use by inserting the conductor into one side and having that orange insert as the only insulation on the other side?

I feel a little more comfortable with plugs like these.

But they wouldn't be able to sell that first kind without some sort of extra instructions on plugging up the unused side and the lug side, would they? I thought about stuffing them with duct seal or something. Taping them up sort of defeats the purpose of the nice looking install. Not that orange tabs are all that pretty.

I wouldn't have a problem with it. I've never seen that brand before, it's all Polaris, Burndy and Ilsco insulated taps over here.

I had never seen them, they didn't have the right size at the nearby supply house and I found these at the orange store. I bought them because I really wanted to get a panel live and needed to splice a feed I had to make it happen. Amazon had the ones I want (Morris 97107), but even if I bought them using my Prime membership they were still estimating two weeks for delivery when I checked "free 2-day delivery".

I was at a different supply house today, one that I hardly ever go to, and they had all the ones I need so I bought three more sets of them so I'll have them. They have a good selection, so I'll remember to go there next time.

I guess even without the plugs they're still pretty well protected, unlikely something is just going to go into the hole that could short it out against something. They're in a dry location junction box, not outside on the service drop or anything.

You don't use these where people can touch them so no worries.

I agree. As long as the plugs don't fall right out, I'd use them.

I've used them and no problems with them. The plug actually stays in well and you have to exert a little pressure to pull them out.

Do you guys plug the holes on say breakers or main lugs when you install a panel?

Exposed live parts in an enclosure are generally allowed.

OK wise a$$ let's see you phrase it better. :D
Perhaps "Uninsulated live parts in an enclosure are generally allowed."

FWIW, I may have used the same terminology had I replied to that post. 110.26(A)(1) has its influences...
... Distances shall be measured from the exposed live parts or from the enclosure or opening if the live parts are enclosed. ...
...and it's used five more times just in 110.26 alone.
