Re: larger breaker sizes available?

I wonder if AFCI requirements will ever have a provision similiar to that of 215.9 I have installed wiring in some large homes that have a small sub-panel for general lighting and receptacle loads only.

In the event that future NEC editions expand AFCI's to other areas of the home, I wonder if this would assist in defering some of the cost assoicated with purchasing several branch-circuit AFCI breakers

Re: larger breaker sizes available?

Bryan,
I see nothing in the code that would prevent the us of a subpanel with an AFCI main to protect all of the circuits that require AFCI protection. The wording only requires that the entire branch circuit have AFCI protection. It does not require that the individual branch circuit breakers have AFCI protection. I don't even think that the wording is 215.9 is required to permit the use of feeder type GFCI protection. Again the code is 210.8 only tells us what receptacle outlets must have GFCI protection. Nothing specifies how this protection is to be provided. Feeder type GRCI protection may be more problematic due to the cumulative leakage current approaching or exceeding the 5 mA trip point.
