I have it on good authority that the pictured practice comes from people looking at black tape labeled 'splicing tape' and then going ahead and using it that way.

I see such splices in many old houses. Really, though, I think the practice is a hold over from the old K&T days when splices without boxes were legal.

From the looks of the insulation on that wire I'd say it has worked for the last 50 years or so:grin:

this may have been code compliant at the time of installation.

NM was introduced into the NEC in 1926. It required a box from the git-go:

507. Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable.
507.f. Shall be run without joints, splices or taps from outlet box to outlet box (or junction boxes or plates).

Paratrooper splice

I always call any splice that is enclosed by nothing but the air a paratrooper splice. I think that one qualifies.
