My buddy wants me to put an outlet in for a new laundry room in his house. Is one designated 20 amp duplex receptacle sufficient for one wash machine and one gas dryer, or do I need two?

A 20 amp circuit is sufficient for both appliances and is all that's required unless for some reason they had equipment that require an individual branch circuit as part of its listing. You can also use a 15 amp duplex if you prefer.

I almost always pull two 20A circuits to a laundry room unless its a laundry closet.
I would recommend also pulling a 10/3 to the dryer so he's setup for electric if he ever goes that route.
Its easy while the walls are open.
