Lawn signage

Does anyone have thoughts on the signs that you put in the front yard of jobs that you do. I am contemplating getting some of these made up. There is a landscaper in my town that started about a year or 2 ago, he puts his signs up on all his jobs. The guy is a houseold name now. It seems you can't swing a cat without hitting one of his signs. For those of you that do, do you recommend long lasting signage or use it a couple of times and throw it out, It is about $400.00 for 25 of these things.

I used them 25 or 30 years ago (when I was young and eager) and they did help on new construction sites. Amoung other things we rent temporary power poles to jobsites and each one of them has a big stenciled name & phone #. Some people think I must have a couple hundred of them but it's really closer to 50. So I guess it works.

Bob on the left coast.

Bobby, yes we have a few of those. They are leaning against the side of the shop. I guess we should put some at a house here and there. Our best advertisement is a large sign on the side of a storage module or semi trailer on a jobsite for 6 months to a year. We had a semi trailer at one of the busiest intersections in town for almost 2 years. I heard alot of people recognized it. It beats spending about 10k a year on ads.

Yeah, I hate them. Every time I drive by one of them, I wonder what sort of customer would let a contractor use his yard for advertising space. ;)

I'd rather have the customers who find out about me from a satisfied customer than by a sign with my name on it, any day of the week.

Sounds Like a little Jealous of the competition?

Nope, I just have higher aesthetic standards than some. Matter of fact, that's one of the reasons I left Texas. :)

If I hired a contractor to work on my house and s/he stuck a sign in my yard, I'd make them remove it immediately or else knock $500 off the job for an advertising fee.

Actually, now that I think about it...I see lawn signs for lawn companies, roofers, siding contractors, window companies, and painters, but I don't think I've seen one around here advertising an EC.

Only the outside landscape lighting contractors do yard signs.
And most of them are Franchisees. So it must be a business mandate that is required of them.
My pool contractor put one in my yard when they started. It disappeard at night, they put another one in the next day, it too disappeared. They never asked me if I was OK with it. When they were finished & did the start up, I gave them back all 11 of their signs.
Like I was going to let people look over my fence, in my yard at the pool? Yea Right!

It makes sense that signs would only be used for landscape lighting or similar outdoor work. I spoke to the landscape guy and he was saying that the town will give him a hard time if the signs are there more than 2 days. By the time I buy the signs, install them and retrieve them, they will probably start getting real expensive, given the price of fuel. I have seen some for EC's and have never been able to determine if they did a kitchen remodel, basement remodel or changed a defective gfci. Thanks for the replies.

The yard signs are a tacky way of advertising, the town next to us issues fines for them if they are left too long, some homeowners will ask, i hope your not intending to put a sign up here, you can get a feel for their distaste, to sinage.

I have seen these signs work well for a couple of guys. The type of customer who would let a contractor put one of these signs up is a happy one.

Sounds like someone needs more important things to worry about.

Unless you think we.... "needs more important things to worry about."

But this isn't a forum for the middle east bombings....Uh Oh
I'm starting trouble again!!!

My point was that if you really take the time to "Hate" a simple little yard sign you should have more important things in your life to worry about.

Some people are up on their high horse and feel that they are better then the next guy because he uses a yard sign. Hey, what ever helps the next guy. I guess I just like to view things in a positive manner and wish each contractor the best of luck. I would never look down on someone because they are tring new ways to bring in business such as a lawn sign so that they can provide for their family.

My drywall guy puts signs up when he's working. He's been in business a long time and is quite busy, and I know firsthand that he does top-notch work.

I sometimes see signs for roofers, stucco, and masonry outfits. I haven't seen any ECs use them, though. The sign on my truck is bigger than any sign I'd put up, anyway.

Oooh. :)

Up to this point you've questioned both my intelligence and my judgement in this thread, accused me of being on a high horse, and suggested that I need to get a life. And you really don't know anything about me other than that I hate lawn signs...?

BTW, that's "hate" as in "I find them ugly and distasteful", not "hate" as in "I'm emotionally disturbed by them." ;)

I'll just assume you're having a bad day and leave it at that, this isn't the place to get into a pissing match.

Have a nice day,

We have put up yard signs at new houses, I don't know if they have done us any good.

But, all the vans are painted the same color and have large logos all around. We bought a step van from an auction that used to belong to the POCO that has huge logos. The A/C in the cab works great, the back has a roof top A/C, it has a generator, tons of cabinets and drawers, lockers, an inverter, fluorescent lights, and a killer sound system. (We call it the "Electric RV") Everybody tells us about it.

FWIW, It also has a 6.5 L diesel that gets better mileage than my E350! It's a 1998 and we gave $3600 for it.

You, perhaps?

I don't recall anyone worrying about anything. Someone asked for our opinions on lawn signs, and I offered one.

I wasn't aware that it would cause you personal discomfort. Sorry. :)
