All,

I have an application at a landfill in which I need to power a pump. The pump is in a location in which i can not direct burial anything. This is because we can not penetrate the land fill cap which is basically at grade. Question: Is it acceptable by code to run MC cable on top of ground to this pump location? Where does the code reference this? Other suggestions?

Thanks

Since the code uses "where subject to damage" clause in almost all wiring methods, I would suggest you just call you local inspector and find out what he will accept. MC cable seems unlikely though IMO it is too subject to damage. Perhaps Sch80, EMT or IMc on some Caddy roof blocks? Again unltimately you have to satisfy the Authority Having Juristiction.

How far are you running and what is likely sources of physical damage?

Will it be well exposed or will vegetation eventually conceal its location?

Not sure about MC- of course, it would have to be listed for wet location- but you can run other piping systems on the ground. If this is a closed area without traffic then I would check with the AHJ.
