You could also try your local chapter of ASHRAE. I took their classes in the '80s and it has been invaluable.

IMO going to a instructor led class is the best way to learn, especially for a trade. If you want to take night classes, a good school in your area is Los Angeles Trade Technical College and Pasadena City College.
