We recently had a service call to a building that we wired and C.O. in June of 05. The Fire Marshall had made his every 6month inspection. There are 14 EXIT fixtures with battery backup in each fixture. Out of 14, 9 of the lights did not work. We called our supplier and tried to order new batteries or whatever was needed. What we got in return was 6 pages of how to trouble-shoot the electronic components in the fixture. The Rep. for the fixture told my supplier that his 1yr. warranty was up and that I should replace the Edge lit LED Exit light at a cost of $295 each! Not the answer I was looking for. My supplier has done all in their power to rectify the problem. The batteries are warranted for 5yrs. The manufacturer and factory lighting Rep. did nothing but e-mail. I have ordered and now replacing the 9 lights.
My point?should any Emergency Wall Pack, Exit Fixture or ANY light that guarantees the safety of people getting out of the building be at least 5yrs OR lifetime warranty? If someone falls, gets killed, etc do to this problem, the Elec. Contr. will be at fault. The sales Rep., Factory Rep, Manufacture of Fixture made their profits and left all the liability to the Elec. Contractor who is established for 40yrs.
If all electronic parts and pieces are made in China and now have changed, should we go back every 2yrs and replace lights? (Don?t think so!) How about when we had 110 V to the Exit Light and we put in new bulbs about every 5-6 yrs. Or the maintenance people could install a new bulb. I think the Exit fixtures and Emerg. Wall Packs should also have a light or warning device to come on like a smoke detector. Please give me your input on this problem. Perhaps U.L. & NEC need to be on top of this problem that got NO response from the fixture Rep.
Thank you,
WDP
