LED lamps and dimmers

I am looking for help in finding a LED lamp and compatible dimmer. Application will be 6" Halo ICAT housing. An equivalent to a 65W R30 flood is what I would like. I have tried several manufacturer recommended combinations (lamp supposedly compatible with dimmer per manufacturer) and have not found anything yet that either does not "hum" or have a lengthy lag time in starting the lamp. It's frustrating and costly to keep "experimenting" with different combinations. Would greatly appreciate if someone could list a lamp/dimmer combo that they are using with satisfactory results. The big orange store sells a commercial electric product (T65) that is very reasonable, anybody here ever use this ? The associate says they work great, I also see him working in the paint department quite often. Thanks much.

Are you looking for a screw-in lamp to replace R30, or are you loking for a retrofit LED trim? That Home Depot T65 is not an R30.

Also, not sure what color temp you have in mind, but I have noticed (in several stores) that the T65 display says it is "warm white", but the box says "soft white"

Warm is 3000k, while soft is 2700k. So if that matters, make sure you check. But I have not used them, as I use Sylvania 6" retrofit trims, which are awesome.

Unfortunately the use of those terms for color temperature of lights is far from standardized. Here is one example of a spectrum description: http://www.usa.philips.com/e/led-lighting/warm-white-led-lighting.html

There seems to be general agreement that when the term soft-white is used it refers pretty specifically to 2700K.
Warm white on the other hand, can range all the way from 2700 to 3000, while some add the term neutral white or natural white to describe up to 3500K or even higher.
There is also disagreement on whether cool-white or daylight has a higher color temperature.
And the application of the same terms varies among LED, CFL and FL contexts. :happysad:

Your best bet, IMHO, is to look at the actual CCT (Coordinated Color Temperature) specification and then add in a large subjective factor that good spectral distribution (roughly measured by CRI) will make any CCT bulb look better in terms of its effect on surrounding colors and "naturalness" to the eye.

As for the original question of lamp-dimmer combinations, all I can say is that even the compatibility lists from manufacturers are not reliable, possibly because the specifications of LED and dimmer change freely or possibly because of poor testing.
The only thing that I would rely on before making a large investment would be to specifically test the combo I intended to use.
