Guys, we have been wondering if anyone has seen any allowances to the NEC codes and load calculation formulas for LED lighting. We are basing this question on the whole house being LED lighting. Also, does an LED light in closet areas still require the same clearance as incandescent lighting from shelves and such. The clearance rule was to avoid fires due to heat generated by older lighting technologies. Just inquiring at this point. Thanks all.

410.16 is specific on required clearances for surface mount LED's -- There are a few luminaires out there (LED's) that are listed to be installed "within closet storage space" area that has 0" clearances. The listing is specific & do not confuse it with the terminology "for closet use". While I may agree that some LED lighting does not produce excessive heat only a NRTL is quailified to list & label products . IMO I do not anticipate changes in the NEC calculation methods as using LED technology is a choice not mandated by NFPA 70. Most LED lamps fit in a screwshell that also holds incandescents.

What happens when you rough in a box in a closet and put in a LED fixture then the home owner, who doesn't like the color of the light output, changes the fixture out to a screw shell fixture and puts a 100 lamp in it.

I think the clearance should stay the same as it is for a closet fixture.
