when you disconnect the line side of an LED digital service entrance meter does it reset itself? & if so, why doesn't it reset itself in the event of a blackout. if it doesn't reset itself, what stops it from resetting?

Most meters have a battery back up to keep the reads and time if they are an off peak meter the battery keeps the correct time when there is a power outage.

Battery back up, that would make a lot of sense. thank you. Also, being electronic, would they register when the leads are disconnected on the face of the meter?

Not sure what your talkin about with the leads. Some meters have curret transformers if they were unhooked you could have a high voltage situaton depending on load on the service.

by leads i just mean if you disconnect the service entrance wires from the feed to the meter(2 hot legs & neutral)does it register on the LED screen of the meter that they were disconnected.

This is more likely a LCD screen, not LCD. Many of these meters are radio read daily. The most likely have memory on the data storage that is not lost in a power failure and probably a large capicator for power back.
