Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday.

Just got back to work after a week off and got a report that an electrician that was working on a department store remodel that I am inspecting is in the hospital in a coma.

Seems he was working on the lighting (277v) and it was to much work to shut it off, he got hit and fell off the ladder landing on his head.

Bet his company has a new policy in place today.

Remember we're not in that big of a hurry.

STAY SAFE!

Similar incident happened to my friend the week before Christmas...he wasn't in a coma, but they held him overnight - he has some burns on his hands and possible nerve damage.

Be careful!

Start the New Year off right - work safe EVERY TIME.

Spend the time it takes to watch this video -http://www.electrician2.com/safety/electricalsafety_01.htm

...there will be a quiz on 12/31/2007.

Also anyone with this type of injury should go to an "electrical trauma center" for an evaluation. There are a lot of details that even the best doctors that do not work with this every day will miss. In my area it is at the University of Chicago.
The director of the program there is an MD and has a PhD in electrical engineering. I understand that there are a few other electrical trauma centers, but I don't know where they are.

I agree, we need to be extra vigilant about safety. A few months back, I received a bad shock from a piece of equipment we were using. Thankfully, it was plugged into a GFCI per company policy. I did receive a shock but it tripped before anything bad happened.

If you have safety rules and you ignore them, and and accident happens, you can be assured that lawsuits will be brought against you and everyone else involved.

Right here.
I visited a job today where my fellas on the top of an extension ladder pushed a steel fish tape through a pipe into an energized panel. I summarily awarded him the next couple of days off to think about how dumb that was. Not to mention that the extension ladder was leaned against a purlin, with only about 2" of the tip of the ladder resting on something.

...but most bosses don't really give a XXXX about safety, just getting the job done.
If that is the kind(s) of boss(es) you have had, then I don't envy you. Neither will I offer any sympathy, as you don't seem interested in getting any. I can only hope that if and when you find yourself in the position of boss, you will treat safety with a higher level of priority.

Safety is not all about making sure you (or the boss) is not the one who gets blamed for an accident or injury. It is all about taking intentional steps to reduce the chances of an accident or injury ever happening.

My safety begins with me. Period. However, I expect it to be important to my employer as well. If I am expected to do a job in an unsafe manner, I will refuse, if nessary I'll walk. New job=easy. New life=well...

sorry just a bad week at work
It's only Wednesday, brother, and most of us had Monday off. Take tomorrow off to relax, with pay, and tell them that some guy on the internet said it was okay. :D

When I was first working as a welder, I was very willing to work in unsafe environments. Like, standing on a giant sheet of steel with a welding lead in one hand in the pouring rain.

Then I got older and starting to think that the tingling feelings I was experiencing at times weren't such a good thing.

Was this in Simi, John?? BTW, how did the job at the old penny pinchers turn out?? I did that Job with Andy.

The company I work for now has a guy that got hung up on 277 and the guy working with him kicked the ladder out from under him. He ended up head first into a concrete floor and mangled his head pretty good, as well as a messed up shoulder. I think the fall did more damage than anything else.

Hey,

Yeah at the Macys store at the mall. You're right sometimes the fall is the worst part.

Penny pinchers finally got done no fault of Andys.
