Don't know if this is where this belongs, but I'll start it here anyways.

Awhile back we had a thread about people slamming other people and that's why some people chose not to participate in some of these discussions.

Well that happened to me in a thread, not that I didn't kind of expect it when I wrote it, but the response was personal and that's what I take offense to.

I don't condem or belittle anyone when they post and all I expect is the same courtesy and I believe that is all any one of us expects. The mistake I made was giving too much information, but no one here knows me well enough to tell me I should quit my job because I'm a hypocrite.

Let's all play nice.

OK I feel better.

I am a new guy here and have felt the same at times. I would imagine there are other members here that do not voice their opinion, for fear of backlash.

Tom

I guess you have to be sure of what your saying.

Yep, sometimes its like the deep end of the public pool huh? ;)

There are some forum bullies around, but often you'll find that if someone gets too far out of line that people will gang up on the bully a little bit. Comes around and goes around, but for the most part I think these areas are pretty well policed.

If its too much, seek out ECN.nets forums - more of an adult swim over there IMO. Slower pace, campier topics, and some of the same members from here....

Well, hopefully it doesn't get so out of hand that you have to find a better pool to swim in.

We all need a reminder to stay upbeat every now and then.

Tom, no worries - as long as you have the same opinion I do, I won't harass you one bit! :D :D

I'll try!!!!!!

What I learned here in the very beginning was that you need some thick skin. But having said that, it has done me more good than bad. Shooting from the hip without looking something up was my biggest mistake. Nothing like having the words directly from the NEC thrown right into your face. An electrician I know who has only done commercial work for his entire 15 year career posted a question about his own home. The responses weren't pretty, some of us forgot that this guy was in uncharted waters. My advice is to hang in there and don't let a few sarcastic comments keep you from posting.

I'm not sure what treatment you received, but definitely stick around. Most here will agree that this forum is a great learning tool. Very humbling as well. Most members are very genuine, but you'll always find a few yahoos, too. Often, we're all a little too opinionated. That's what keeps it interesting and fun.

Glad to hear you voice the thoughts, though.

Tom, here's how I see it; this is my list in order, of the best thing that can happen down to the worst, here.

1. I learn something new. (I'm selfish, I get the biggest kick out of learning something for myself.)
2. I teach something new to someone else.
3. Hearing about a different way to enforce a section that I'd taken for granted to mean something else, since forever.
4. A debate with something at stake. A discussion that may change the way I do my job - I may have been doing a code violation for years. What do the words say?
5. A debate just for fun. Playing devil's advocate.
6. An agreement to disagree. It may be a stalemate, but it's an agreement, none the less. Not as satisfying as winning (or even losing, see list-item #1), but it's better than walking away convinced the other guy is an idiot. :D
7. Shooting the breeze. It passes the time, but it's not what brought me here.
8. Someone who refuses to acknowledge the majority. I'm not saying "give in to" the majority - When I see a majority line up against me, then I walk slower and have more doubt. Many people believing something I do not means there's a much higher chance I've read something wrong. A refusal to at least notice just strikes me as irrational.
9. Unnecessary Putdowns. The biggest loser is the first to call names.

Anybody got something to add to the list, besides DIYers? :D

I know what your saying about the forum at times. Kind of like showing up in the bar in "Starwars". One never knows who has their weapon on safety, or is laying in wait.

Kind of strange first couple of trips in, but after while, you can come in, and the background noise remains the same.

I just don't get the need to be on attack, when someone has a question. If we were perfect, we wouldn't be here. But that said, this is one of the best sites on the web. Throw a question in here, and it gets scrutinized by some of the best around. There will some obnoxious remarks by the little ones (some just having fun), but there will be some great solutions offered by those that have already worn those moccasins.

So if it's a little tough, put on a flame proof-suit, and don't get to concerned. Have some suds, eat some popcorn, throw a couple of things out, and watch the action. It's always worth coming back!

Don't sweat it cowboy.

Some folks can't fathom anyone remotely even seeing things differently than them, and find it better to publicly slam them, rather than thinking about the possibilities that they toss out.

You deserve an apology...........

Thanks guys I'm not going anywhere. I've been an inspector for going on 18 years now and I've growen some pretty tough skin.

Ask anyone that knows me and I can tangle with the best and I'm guilty of a sarcastic remark or two myself and when you type it it doesn't always have the same effect as the spoken word, but it's always just in fun.

I think this is a great site and I try to check it at least once a day. I read many more posts than I respond to simply because I am learning something too.

I'm sure you all got my point. Attack the issue and not the person.

I love many of the opinions and as george said I love them most when they agree with me.

You guys have a safe and happy holiday season if I don't talk to you before then.

What i see happening is, someone will post a how much should i charge, or what is the going rate, and the responses will come, form not only those in an established business, but from others that have little or no real business experience, and make comment's on how they operate, this issue will, and usually does outrage, some for the members that have their life investment in a long, and hard built business.

With a site like this, where it covers the world, not just our own local areas, both prices, and work practices will differ greatly, and the members will also differ in qualifacations, and experience, the electrical issues and discussions are pretty broad, and usually have posters respond from every level of experience, however when it comes to the pricing, it is best to remember your prices, or costs of doing business will never be the same as the other guy, unless every cost item is exactly the same.

The reason for going in business, is usually to do better then working for wages, and over time build some assets.

So please try not to get personal, when discussing the business issues, and understand the broad areas this site covers.

It's so easy to forget that what is obvious to one can be totally obscure to another. There is a vast difference between intelligence and experience, and it's unfair to accuse someone with different experience than our own to be stupid.

That someone needing opinions/advice/confirmation has even bothered to seek out our forum, and summoned the nerve to ask that first question, indicates a genuine desire to learn, and we should consider it both a compliment and an honor to respond.

A little patience might be in order. Kumbaya, dudes!

When I first signed on looking for help to pass the JM test I said, "Whats up with these guy's! I thought they were professionals!" Fired back a little.... I'm used to the jerks on the boards from the local newspaper......... Then I found out that the people here are Professional! (about 99.9%) Hang in there, I have learned so much from this site! And learn something almost every day!

ain't no rhino

ain't no rhino

At 55, I have fairly thick skin, but no longer suffer fools gladly
Like my mother always said: "it's a wonderful life if you don't weaken..."

...pass the popcorn
