I had a customer call today requesting information about testing his backup generator. Seems the state has requested level 1 & 2 testing of the generator.

What is involved with this ?

It would depend on the classification of the system. Emergency, legally requried. as far as testing 708.52 C addresses ground fault testing. 708.64 refers you to NFPA 1600-2007 for standards.

Read this:http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/fpc/Gensets2.pdf

But I think it is really stringent on the initial acceptance test. Be aware Level 1 is VERY stringent and level 2 a little less. I would want to know why the state is asking about level 1 & 2 acceptance tests.

The facility where the generator is installed houses mentally challenged people hence the request for the testing.

But the question is how dose the AHJ list this gen. set? Here in NC for a state owned and operated facility the Dept. of Insurance is the AHJ. They would make the call as to it being emergency, legally requried or standby. with their ruling as to how it classified would tell you more of what would and would not be requried as far as testing.
