Leviton announces 2nd gen smart breakers

I don't know, I don't think I want smart breakers. They would probably automatically do exactly what I don't want them to do at the worst possible moment.

I used to frly with this la\wer frpm Jersey. Him and another guy were flying up to Vermont to go skiing. They iced up and were very close to stall speed. They were flying a Piper with retractable gear. The darn thing thought they were coming in for a landing and forgot to put their gear down, so it put the gear down for them. The drag from the gear was too much and they crashed into the side of a mountain and burned.

Somehow they both survived. It took rescuers 2 days to find them. He told me right after he crashed they looked at each other and said OMG we are alive. He started to reach over to kill the switches and before he could touch them it all erupted in a ball of fire

I don't like things that take control from me

I'm ok so long as a manual turn off can't be app turned back on. If so I'd want every breaker to have built in lock out provisions.
The ones Square D and Eaton stay off if the handle is off, Square D has a white latch that you can release to override the remote off/on. Eaton, you have to turn the panel controller off, then turn the breaker off, then back on to override. The bad thing, is it takes the entire panel out of automatic operation, where Square D can be independently manually overridden.

Square D QO had something like this with 3 small colored wires coming from a breaker. Never seen one in real life.

PowerLogic. You can still buy them, I’ve installed quite a few for lighting controls. The QO version is a little finicky. The NF motorized breakers are better.

Square D is about to release a new QO product to compete with the Leviton smart breakers. No info out in the wild yet. From what I’ve seen in videos it looks like a bus mounted relay without overcurrent protection. I think they’re powered by an adjacent breaker. It’s called Schneider Pulse and will be marketed as part of the Wiser Energy system.

I’ve installed a lot of the Eaton solenoid breakers; they seem to be a better product and don’t have the 3-5 second “recharge” time like the QO PowerLogic. Eaton also has a WiFi enabled BR and BAB breaker line that is a direct replacement for standard breakers with wireless communication. I quoted some for a job during covid and they had a 9/mo lead time.

Take a look at my PI.

It sounds like you are addressing neutrals on GFCI and MWBC.

My comment with the small colored wires on some special QO was that they are there to operate some internal contacts that engage or disengage the connected circuit. These are control wires and 20 gauge IIRC. Nothing to do with current.
