Hello All;

I'm a newbie here and have a few questions I hope someone can help me out with.

I have several years experience working under a Master in Ohio many, many years ago. The Master i worked under is now dead and I have no records relating to the dates and work performed. I now live in Montana and have been working as an "in house" electrician for a Mining company for the last 12 years. In montana, MSHA regulates the mining industry. The Mine I work for will be shutting down in the next 6 months and I figure I should get a license as a Journeyman, Problem is, I cannot document my Ohio experience and I'm wondering if my experience in the mining industry count for anything?

I'm up in the age and don't want to go through the whole apprenticeship thing again. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

If you can't document your Ohio experience, it probably won't count. They need to have some way to verify your experience. Otherwise, anyone could just make stuff up.

As for the mining experience, you'd have to ask the state board. I'd tend to believe it would not count since mines are specifically excluded from the NEC. But maybe they'll consider it there. It's really up to them.

What about income tax returns and W-2 forms from you old employer? Ok maybe not everyone saves those things for 20 years like me.

I am from Colorado now living in Alaska. I have been a mine electrician for several years in Nevada and Colorado plus working commercial work in Colorado. I had all the documentation but CO would not accept any of my mining time. I kept all my letters and presented them to Alaska's licensing board and they had no problem with them and approved my app for the journeymans test here. Will be taking it in Dec. So, as Jeff said, It depends on the state board. By the way, once I pass the test here, I can reciprocate with CO. Go figure.

Re: License Requirement

Re: License Requirement

Thanks everyone for the responses.

I suppose I will call the board and see what they have to say about the mine experience. Doesn't make much sense to me if they don't count it...I mean in the Mineing industry you work with everything, including super-high-voltages. Anyway.....

If they don't count it, I guess I could just go to a state that does accept the mining experience and also have a recip with Montana and just take the test there. You pointed out that Alaska is one of those states, but I'd sure ike to find one a little closer.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, I tried to find anything that could document my experience in Ohio, but I didn't save any tax returns, and the IRS said they don't keep them back that far either. Even the State said they don't have them archived back that far. I suppose nothing was kept if there wasn't a computer to keep it on. 30 years was a long time ago.

Hello, I also had worked in the mining industry. We had msha to deal with and we also used the nec for all installation and upgrades. I am from wyoming and the mining time counted here. You had to have double the hours in order to qualify for testing. I would check your state board. Also there is still plenty of work in mining. Good luck
