I wire electrical panels at the company I work for. I am thinking of building (wiring) panels and programming PLC's on my own. My question is what license is needed to build control panels. I would like to start my own business. Thanks in advance. BK

Re: License Requirements

Your local jurisdiction may have requirements for licensing a business, but that would apply to hot dog vendors as well. I have never heard of a license (i.e., electrical journeyman) being required to manufacture electrical equipment. If you are a licensed electrician, then it may give your potential customers some added confidence in your product, but I don't think it is a legal requirement.

Re: License Requirements

If I'm understanding you and you want to sell a product vs. selling a service then would a UL listing be necessary for your product? Listings are expensive.

Maybe post some more details of what you are planning to provide.

Re: License Requirements

examtest,

do the panels you build meet nfpa79 standards?
do the panels you build meet ul & ul 508a standards?

i am unable to tell what part of the country you are from. each state has its own standards as to what the license requirements are.

in tennessee, if you sell a product valued more than 25k, you need a contractors license. a contractors license has 3 parts, buisness, electrical, mechanical.

most companies require control panels to meet ul,and nec standards. this means the national electric code(approx $100), nfpa 79- electrical standards for industrial machinery (approx $35), ul requirements 508A ($400). to get ul panel builders certification will cost approx. $70-100k based on conversations with other ul listed panel build shops. to the best of my knowledge, you don't have to be a ul listed panel shop to build panels, just meet the requirements.

one more pirce of advice, before making the decision to build panels, check the surrounding area to see who else will be your competition, quality of their work, labor rates, most importantly - demand for your services.

hope this information helps and don't get discouraged by my posting.

Re: License Requirements

Will you be performing design/build or will you have another source furnishing your engineered drawings and specifications?
