[h=2]Life Safety Panel fed in MI Cable?[/h]
I've seen fire pump feeds require the 2-hour rating MI cable provides, but this engineer has MI Cable feeding two life safety panels on his riser? The runs are insanely long too so it's going to be very expensive. Is this required? Why would he have drawn it this way?

I thought it was just fire pumps that required the 2 hour rating. Any help is appreciated.

As far as the NEC is concerned, 517.26 (note the I.N. following) and 517.30(C) are the relevant sections, if the designer wants to overkill it or if there are local requirements, just bid to cover them, you can bring it up as a VE item if it's not neccessary.

Also look at 700.10(D)

Also look at 700.10(D)

But then there is this out of the 2015 NFPA 99:

6.5.2.2.1.4 For the purposes of this code, Article 700shall only be applied to the life safety branch.
6.5.2.2.1.5 The following portions of Article 700 ofNFPA70 shall be amended as follows:(A)  700.4 shallnot apply.
(B)  700.10(D)(1) through (3) shall not apply.

So the NEC says that applies, but NFPA 99 says no.

I really wonder if that was a huge typo, and they meant to say 700.10(D)(1)(1) through (3) shall not apply. Big difference - the first one completely eliminates a couple of requirements. The one I typed keeps all requirements, and makes one harder to comply with.

This is not a healthcare facility so I wouldn't think Article 517 would apply. It's a manufacturing facility. So the question is...is a life safety panel feeder required to have a 2 hour rating?

I've worked in hospitals (again this isn't a hospital) and the only thing I've ever seen require a 2-hour rating was the fire pump feed. :?

I don't mind including it for bidding purposes....but I'd still like to know if it's REQUIRED?

Thanks again!

Look at the TIA's on NFPA's website. There is a TIA that deals with this issue.....If your jurisdiction recognizes TIA's.

"Life Safety" is only used in article 517, so the reference is a little misleading.

Thanks for the info. I found 2 TIA's:

https://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/AboutTheCodes/70/TIA_70_17_7.pdf

https://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/AboutTheCodes/70/TIA_70_17_8.pdf

I'm not sure what the first one changed, but the second one deleted health care facilities from the requirement. That seems to reinforce that NFPA 99 is correct.

But now its clear we aren't talking about health care anyway.
