I need to know what electiral code does standby generators fall under. I have 6 liftstations 3 with female inlets for generator hook up and 3 with male inlets. Which is correct? my generator has a male plug.

The general provsions for generators are in Article 445 of the NEC.

Emergency systems are covered in Article 700. 701 covers Legally Required Standby Systems, 702 covers Optional Standby Systems.

Grounding requirements can be found in Article 250.34 and 250.122.

The general rule of thumb for cord and plugs, is that there should not be exposed metal parts that are live.
Your generator will energize the male cord cap and be a hazard.

As Ron said energizing the male cord cap will be a hazard and a code violation.

Here is the code article

2002 NEC
406.6(B) Attachment plugs shall be installed so that their prongs, blades, or pins are not energized unless inserted into an energized receptacle. No receptacle shall be installed so as to require an energized attachment plug as its source of supply.
Notice this article tells us not to make male plugs hot or install receptacles that need a something pluged in to make them live.
